WEEK 2
ASSIGNMENT #2 (all due before Week 3 Tuesday's Classclass begins)
- Tuesday's In-Class exercise is part of Assignment #2
(Create a personalized watermark/copyright/logo to put on all your homework -- it will identify that it's yours :) -- post this to your server and link to it on your portal page to receive credit
- tutorial movie (Copyright/Watermark/Logo) 4+ minutes
- text instructions
- BlueHills.jpg, Sunset.jpg, WaterLilies.jpg, Winter.jpg (images for you to use, if desired)
- tutorial movie (Copyright/Watermark/Logo) 4+ minutes
We will be talking about photo editing today. Due to the fact that the second excercise requires a signature scan (and I don't believe we have a scanner in class and even if we did... we won't have the time to scan everyone in class) I moved it to Thursday and it will be requested that you scan your signature before that class. We will talk about it in class and there is a tutorial on this page that also shows you the process. We will talk about photo editing today instead.
This Thursday's In-Class exercise is part of Assignment #2's expectations
(We'll scan your signature, turn it into a symbol and create an action to automate your ability to add it, as needed) -- post this to your server and link to it on your portal page
- tutorial movie (Import/Scanning with Photoshop) 1+ minute
- tutorial movie (turn a signature into a Brush symbol & create an Action) 3+ minutes
I don't actuall have the steps for this one so you can do it yourself if you like. Simple PLAY/PAUSE the movie to write down its steps, if needed.http://saranewman.com/movies/signaturebrush-action/signaturebrush-action.html ).
By the way, the ACTIONS portion of this 3 minute movie is NOT part of how to create a Brush Symbol, I added that part only as an extra feature because I've had students ask me about it.
You'll find creating a brush symbol out of your scanned picture takes only a few steps :)

INSTRUCTIONS - WATERMARK
Creating and Adding a Watermark/Logo/Copyright to any image!
- Open any image you want to use (I used the PC's Sample Picture called BlueHills.jpg)
- Select the CUSTOM SHAPE Tool (it can be found under the Rectangle Tool)
- In the Custom Shape Tool's OPTION BAR choose from the Shape flyout menu the Copyright Symbol
- In the same option bar set the color chip to a light gray
- In the same option bar set the shape to FILL PIXELS (this changes the vector shape to a rastor image -- we do this because some effects won't work until an image has been rastorized)
- In the Layer Panel add a NEW LAYER
- While holding down the SHIFT key, click and draw the copyright symbol shape on to the Document Window. (holding down the shift key keeps your shape proportional)
- Click the FX icon at the bottom of the Layer Panel to add a BEVEL and EMBOSS effect
- Select the TYPE Tool and type "Copyright 2007 and your name" on the Document Window
- Use the MOVE Tool to reposition your typed text, if needed.
- To resize or change the font family for your type, click the T icon in your Layer Panel (this gives focus to the object) and then adjust your text properties in the TYPE Tool Options bar
- To copy/paste an effect you've used from one layer to another, hold the ALT key down - then click on the EFFECT word on the layer you're copying from and drag it to the layer you want it to be included upon. (Using the ALT key makes a copy, without it you're moving the effect)
- Merge these 2 layers (the symbol and the text) by holding down your CTRL key and click them both so they're both colored. Then choose the tiny flyout arrow to find the MERGE LAYERS choice -- select it
- In the LAYERS Panel change the "blending mode" to HARD LIGHT
- To embed some copyright information select from the File Menu... FILE > FILE INFO and then (under Descriptions) choose Copyrighted under the Copyright Status dropdown window. Then type in your Copyright message .. I wrote, "Copyright 2007 Sara Newman. No usage permitted without written consent. All Rights Reserved." If desired, type in your website URL, as well. Then select OK to close this window.
Now your file name will have a tiny little copyright symbol at the beginning of it and you've embedded some file information in to it that cannot be removed by others
- Save your file for the web. Select File > Save for Web and Devices. Choose 2 up (from the tabs at the top of the window that comes up) and decide if this image is best saved as a .jpg (for gradients) or as a .gif (for solid blocks of color, animation and images with transparent parts) -- then select SAVE and give it a name that's descriptive, short, lowercase, nospaces or funky characters.
- Lastly, upload your finished work to your server and link to in on your portal page for me to find and give you credit!
The end :)
This Thursday's In-Class exercise:
Elements are here: EXAMPLE ELEMENTS
We spoke of creating Masks and one of the questions was how do we go back and edit the mask once we have clicked off that layer.
