WEEK 1
ASSIGNMENT #1
- Get your Thumb Drive and Textbook (#1) immediately -- >
- Create a Portal page (you can make one with your Seattle Central Google App's SCGA account!
all students have this available to them upon registration -- here's their FAQ page, too!) and post it to your server space -I brought a digital camera to class tonight so you get your picture taken to post on your portal page :) post on it the following:
- your photo: It would really help me to get photos of all of you so I can associate the name with the face. I will bring a digital camera thursday so we can take your photos if you need one taken. I would like you to use this photo (or one of your choosing) on your web site. ~ Here also is a 1+ minute showing how to use Photoshop to create a Photo Web Gallery
- a little blurb about yourself and why you're interested in web work.
- links to your homework/deliverables
To accommodate those who are not yet FTPing (because they're in their first week of WEB110) we'll learn how to use Google SITES tool in class. You will find that you can place a good amount (all except your Final Project) of your 'optimized' WEB114 homework there!

- IN Class exercise - Whitening that lovely smile! (we'll be covering this together as a class on Thursday.) - Post before and after on your web site.
- IN Class exercise - Covering Imperfection! (we'll be covering this together as a class on Thursday.) - Post before and after on your web site.
Whitening Teeth (in class assignment)
Open the photo you just saved to your computer in Photoshop and complete the following.
- Select the "ZOOM" tool and click-drag over the smile so you can more easily draw a selection around it (which is the next step).
- Select the "POLYGONAL LASSO" tool (hidden under the LASSO Tool when you click and hold your mouse down over it). Now draw a selection around the teeth being careful not to select any of the gums or lips.
- Go to the Select (in the MENU bar) > Feather menu and when the dialog box comes up enter 1 pixel and click OK. This will smooth out the selected image a little so you won't see a hard edge after you've whitened the teeth.
- Go to the Image (in the MENU bar) > Adjustments > Hue / Saturation and when the dialog box appears, select Yellows from the Edit drop-down box. Then move the Saturation slider to the left to remove yellowing from the teeth.
- Switch the Edit drop-down box back to Master and then drag the Lightness slider to the right to whiten/brighten the teeth. But don't drag it too far and make the the touch-up obvious and then click OK.
- Select (from your keyboard) Control+D [pc] or Apple+D [mac] to "deselect" your selection.
- That's it ~ now save your work.
Covering Imperfection! (in class assignment)
- Using the same photo, Select the "ZOOM" tool and make sure you can see straps of the dress.
- Select the "HEALING BRUSH (j)" tool from the tool menu.
- Holding down the ALT key, Select an area similar to the area you want to repair.
- Let go of the ALT key and adjust your brush size to an appropriate level.
- Click down on the Mouse when you are over the strap with the preferred brush size and move back and forth until the strap is covered in the selected area and then let go of the Mouse button.
- Repeat as needed until you have removed the straps.
- That's it ~ now save your work and post it on your site as a before and after image. :)
